Nominet plans to release super-short domain names

March 17th, 2010 Comments off

nominetGoing on the same route as other TLDs like .DE, the organization responsible for domain names ending in .UK, Nominet, will release for further registration a mass of new short domains in the third level of .uk domain (under co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk and .net.uk). Nominet will also allow the registration of some formerly banned domain names that consist of two or one characters.

However, Nominet plans to exclude from this new release some domains that have been registered before 1996, date of Nominet’s foundation.Among Nominet’s rules of domain name registration there is a rule that forbids one-character domain names like the part of a domain name that comes before .org.uk or .co.uk. Though a letter and a number combined is allowed, the regulations do not allow the registration of two letters domain names in a lot domains that this organization manages. It seems that these rules are up for a change while Nominet considered wisely running a consultation related to this issue that will end on June 8.

Nominet’s Policy Advisory Body has suggested to operate these changes and released this consultation for users and industry players to respond to the plan. While they are considering operating a first round named “sunrise period” – when only those that hold registered trademarks identical to the name they want to apply for may participate – Nominet is not decided yet on how to deal with this issue since both businesses and people are sharing the same equal rights to do it. They are considering charities and NGOs to have priority for org.uk domains and businesses for co.uk domains; for other domain names where a distinction cannot be applied they are inclining to go for a sealed bid auction that will decide new owners for some particular names.

Domain names that are up for being released are as following:
• All currently reserved one character domains in .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk and .net.uk1
• All currently reserved two letter domains in .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk and .net.uk
• We may also release a series of domain names previously reserved e.g.
• Domain names that use a gTLD at the third level, e.g. biz.org.uk
• Domains that use a Second Level Domain at the third level, e.g. sch.org.uk

However, these are only some examples; a more complete list can be found as Appendix 1 on Nominet website.

On the other hand, for a list of domains registered before 1996, an Appendix 2 is available on the same website. For example, in co.uk – bj, bt, cd; in org.uk – bi and in net.uk – u.

Nominet plans to charge for these domains only enough to cover this procedure’s costs, however if after some auctions extra-money are generated they intend to donate those to a charitable organization named Nominet Trust. Nominet founded this organization for protection and education of children situated in the area of information technology.

About Us

October 16th, 2009 Comments off

Whois-UK is a free service provided by Internet Technologies Europe Limited.

If you would like to find out more information about our services please contact us.

All of us are conversant the role search engines play and how easy they have made our life on the internet. Truly without them, we would be lost and will not be able to find the information we seek as quickly as we can do so today.

Something similar is the service provided by the WHOIS domain search, as this wonderful database repository that is maintained by each and every domain registrar consists of all necessary and critical contact information concerning the domains they host. The details that are maintained in the database include the name of the server, the registrar name and so on.  For instance, the Internet Network Information Center or InterNIC as it is popularly known keeps a WHOIS database that tracks all registrar and server name details for domains ending in .com,.net and .org.

Hence when a WHOIS domain search is launched, we are actually making use of WHOIS applications or tools like http://who.godaddy.com/whoischeck.aspx or http://www.checkdomain.com to go through the stored contact information related to a particular domain that has already been stored in one of the WHOIS databases within the internet space. This database will immediately flash back the relevant and required information pertaining to that domain name and very soon you have the name as well as contact information including the details of the administrator in charge of that particular domain in front of you. It is truly amazing and without this facility, internet would never be so efficiently managed. Here you must be aware that the domain name information may change based on how they are maintained on each registrar and that change will get reflected in the WHOIS database instantly.

So what are the uses of WHOIS?

a) You can use it to rectify any mistake in your contact details as the moment you run a check on the WHOIS domain name search that holds your details, the same gets flashed in front of you. By getting in touch with your web host, you can correct the mistakes showing and have the details as per your choice.

b) It is possible to find out details about a website’s existence, tenure and the location of the company or person of that particular website through the WHOIS domain name search. You can thus unearth possible scams by doing a comparison with what is displayed on the site and take necessary action. For example, if a particular website claims to be in operation for many years and your domain name search reveals the contrary, then you know that the website cannot be trusted.  Of course, sometimes you may not get the information through the WHOIS, if the same has been protected by the entity using the protection service offered by certain web hosting companies.

What happens when a website owner seeks protection?

In this case, the privacy of the owner is protected and that helps him from getting exposed to any spam related to domains on the internet. It is only the contact information of the domain name that will be revealed, when a WHOIS search is done and the owner’s name remains a secret. The owner of course can renew, transfer or sell the domain at his convenience.
